Spot flow is real Bitcoin entering or leaving. Futures flow is leveraged positioning on top of it. Both run at once, and when they agree the signal is strong. When they diverge — spot selling while futures buy, or vice versa — the market is under structural tension, and that tension is one of the more reliable edges in order-flow reading.
The two markets
- Spot — real coin changes hands, immediate settlement, no leverage by default; represents true demand and supply (Coinbase, Kraken, Binance spot).
- Perps — no coin moves; a leveraged contract tracks price via the funding rate; volume often several times spot; represents speculative positioning (Binance perp, Bybit, OKX perp).
The funding-rate link
Funding keeps perp price near spot: when perps trade above spot (longs dominate), longs pay shorts a periodic fee, and vice versa. That constant arbitrage pressure tethers the two markets — which is exactly why divergences are temporary and tend to resolve.
The four states
- Both Buying — real capital and positioning aligned; strongest bullish, best follow-through.
- Both Selling — real exits plus speculative shorts; strongest bearish, most sustained breakdowns.
- Divergent — the most information-rich state; resolution tends toward the spot direction, because real capital is harder to force into loss than leverage.
- Balanced — neither side clearly leads; a no-signal state, common in low liquidity or consolidation.
Patterns to watch
- Futures leading spot above 60% — leverage piling in before spot; explosive if spot follows, vulnerable to a squeeze if it doesn't.
- Spot above 60% with futures below 50% — real buyers absorbing futures sellers; classic accumulation that can accelerate if shorts capitulate.
- Both crossing 50% from below together — a momentum flip; real and speculative money turning at once.
Common questions
- Why does the divergence matter? — It marks tension that must resolve; the leveraged side usually resolves toward spot, which is harder to unwind without price impact.
- What does 'Both Buying' mean here? — Taker buy share is above the threshold in both spot and perp over the window simultaneously.
