Cumulative Volume Delta is the running total of taker buy volume minus taker sell volume. Where net delta resets each window, CVD keeps adding — tracing the ongoing battle between aggressive buyers and sellers as one continuous line. Rising means buyers are winning cumulatively; falling means sellers are.
The calculation
Start at zero. For each trade, add its size if the taker bought and subtract it if the taker sold. Plot the running total against time. That's it — the power is in reading the slope and comparing it to price.
Reading the curve
- CVD up + price up — strongest bullish: aggression is driving the move and reinforcing it. Look for continuation.
- CVD down while price up — bearish divergence: the rally is running on thinner aggression; often distribution at highs.
- CVD down + price down — strongest bearish: sellers driving; continuation likely until CVD turns or hits major support.
- CVD up while price down — bullish divergence: selling into rising buy aggression; often accumulation at lows.
Spot CVD vs. futures CVD
- Spot CVD rising — real capital entering; someone is taking actual Bitcoin, not just a derivative position.
- Futures CVD rising while spot is flat/falling — leveraged longs opening without real buyers behind them; can set up a long squeeze.
- Spot CVD rising while futures is flat — real accumulation without leverage; one of the cleaner bullish reads.
Timeframes matter
CVD is only meaningful relative to its window. A 1-minute CVD turning up says little; a multi-hour trend says a lot.
- 1m / 5m — intra-candle momentum; useful for timing, noisy for trend.
- 15m / 1h — session-level flow; most reliable for intraday bias.
- 4h / 1d — swing confirmation; divergences here are higher-conviction (and need the history backend, coming later).
Common questions
- Is CVD leading or lagging? — Coincident. It shows aggression in real time, so it can confirm a move as it unfolds or flag divergence before price reverses.
- What is a CVD divergence? — When CVD and price move in opposite directions (e.g. higher highs in price, lower highs in CVD) — a sign the move's backing is weakening.
